DTL Coaching clinic with Bill Illes
Yes even competent clay target shooters cannot over look the benefit of some quality coaching. Around 2 months ago I was informed Bill Illes was taking three coaching clinics around the Auckland region. I signed on for the Friday clinic and turned up at Auckland Met along with 10 other shooters.
Bill & support team arrived and we were into it. First off Bill watched us all shoot 25 targets & while we shot Bills helpers filmed each of us shooting from different angles. Bill then critiqued our various styles and unwound a few bad habits. It was great to be able to watch our selves make the mistakes that Bill very quickly picked up on in the film footage. (As they say monkey se monkey do)
We then put Bill advise into practice and quickly showed improvement, all the while Bill continued to give us good constructive advice.
Next we headed to the pattern board to check point of impact. All good there, so we continued to shoot on and off for the remainder of afternoon. Bill was very good about his advice and was not afraid to answer any questions, no matter how silly they sounded. (I believe Bill said just ask it, because the guy standing besides you probably wants to know the answer but maybe afraid to ask.)
Bills shooting achievements are stuff of legend and his ability to recall various shooters and their various strengths & weaknesses is incredible. Many coaches in just chant a dogma. Bills advice is given constructively and focused to the individual shooters requirements. For me Bill very quickly worked out each individuals key area’s to improve on and then had that world of experience to be able to tell them how to make those changes successfully.
Bill is no longer a spring chicken so if you get the opportunity to attend one of his coaching clinics DO IT, there is no body in NZ to compare. Bill makes the trip to NZ every 18 months or so book into the next clinic take a notebook and watch your shooting improve.
I for one would not hesitate to attend the next opportunity that arises.
