Long Range shooters' demands prompted the development of the 22 caliber 90 grain Hollow Point Boat Tail. The 90 grain MatchKing® is the result of a series of testing that included both accuracy and exterior ballistics in order to find the optimum bullet for the Long Range competitor. The 90 grain MatchKing® is designed for single loading and is not intended to be fed from a magazine due to the inherent requirements for a bullet of this type.
MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are not recommended for most hunting applications, despite their worldwide reputation for record-breaking accuracy. Although MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are popular for varmint hunting, their design does not give the same consistent explosive expansion in varmints as their thinly jacketed Hornet, Blitz, or Varminter counterparts at equal velocities.
When pushed at muzzle velocities less than 2650 fps, Sierra recommends a 6.5" twist barrel for the #9290 22 cal 90 gr HPBT bullet. A 17" twist barrel will stabilize the bullet correctly in cartridges like the Valkyrie with muzzle velocity above 2650 fps.
