Because of the considerable quantity of exposed lead at the tip and the somewhat bigger aperture in the jacket, semi-point bullets expand faster than spitzer bullets in rifles. This bullet, which is capable of exceptional precision, can be a good choice for varmints and small animals in many early 22 centerfire rifles with slower twist rates than those typically used today. The Semi-Point design shortens the bullet for a given weight, making it easier to control. A Semi-Pointed bullet has a lower ballistic coefficient than a Spitzer-pointed bullet of the same weight as a penalty. Modern rifles with faster twist rates can also use this bullet.
Because of the velocity restrictions imposed by short barrels in handguns, semi-point bullets are most helpful when the twist rate is insufficient to achieve the best accuracy with a spitzer bullet. The semi-point design's relative shortness can help with bullet stabilization and accuracy. This bullet will not expand explosively at longer ranges, but it may be beneficial at shorter ranges for fur bearers whose pelts must be saved due to the wide jacket opening and generous exposed lead tip.
