These rounds have the same nominal 30 caliber size as a number of foreign military forces. In recent years, the majority of these have found their way to the United States as war trophies or as military excess. The British Lee-Enfields, late-war Japanese Arisakas, Russian Moisin-Nagants, SKS and AK-47s, as well as their various clones from former Soviet bloc countries, are among them. The 303 British, 7.7mm Arisaka, 7.62x54R, and, of course, the ubiquitous 7.62x39mm are the cartridges associated with these guns.
Most of these guns use a .311″ diameter projectile but it is prudent to slug the bore if any doubt exists. Given the wartime production conditions and occasionally questionable pedigrees of some of these rifles, this procedure is a worthwhile investment. Many of these rifles are capable of delivering decent accuracy and are powerful enough to serve for use on big game.
