The Heat Shield Tip forms a perfect meplat, with no tip deformation caused by aerodynamic heating. Accurate hunting bullet with devastating terminal performance at all ranges. In high BC bullets, conventional polymer tips melt in flight. Hornady engineers discovered that standard bullet tip materials melt and distort in streamlined, high BC bullets.
Although it is not a serious concern with moderate BC conventional tipped varmint and hunting bullets, aerodynamic heating causes BC reduction and accuracy loss, especially at long ranges (400 yards or more). Hornady discovered a heat-resistant polymer and created the patent-pending Heat Shield tip to counteract this effect. This ground-breaking novel tip produces the perfect meplat (tip) with remarkably consistent results from bullet to bullet and lot to lot.
The Heat Shield tip resists aerodynamic heating and preserves its shape, resulting in a flawless meplat (tip) that is always the same shape. A streamlined secant ogive with optimal boattail design, highly concentric AMP bullet jackets, and the patent-pending Heat Shield tip combine to deliver a wonderfully accurate, high BC match bullet. Doppler radar is used to measure ELD-Match bullet BCs, which are then corrected for typical air circumstances.
The bullet expands continuously along its penetration path with a high velocity, 0-400 yard impact. The jacket's thick shank and high Interlock ring keep the core and jacket together, delivering 50-60% weight retention. The Heat Shield tip drives backward into the bullet to induce expansion for low velocity, 400+ yard hits. Exhibiting conventional expansion with a large mushroom and 85-90% retained weight the bullet provides deep penetration and large wound cavities. This is not loaded ammunition.
